The Cincinnati health department held a conference Thursday about the bed bug problem, ONN's Lot Tan reported.
Officials said the number of bed bug complaints in the city have doubled since last year. Eliminating an infestation can be difficult.
"In the southwest Ohio region, the bed bug species are very resistant to pesticides that are available," said Camille Jones of the Cincinnati health department.
It may take months of repeated insecticide applications to remove bed bugs from a home, experts said.
Exterminators have been kept busy by bed bug infestations.
"Our sales and phones are ringing off the hook for bed bugs," said Tami Burkel, owner of Valley Termite and Pest Control.
Health officials said prevention is the best advice. They recommend not sitting down or setting bags down inside an infested home to avoid getting one's own clothes and belongings infested.
